Introduction

The project  Steps for LIFE LIFE20 NAT/ES/000309 – Non-motorized long-distance routes such as green infrastructures aims to transform long-distance paths with significant cultural and natural values into multifunctional green infrastructures. This is achieved through interventions aimed at improving ecological connectivity and the conservation status of habitats for the target species of the project. The project is taking place on the Lebaniego Trail in Cantabria and the Portuguese Way of Saint James  (Camino de Santiago) as it passes through Vila Nova de Gaia.

Long Distance Non-Motorized Routes (LDNMRs)  are international or intranational paths of considerable length where motorized vehicles are not allowed. They can only be traveled on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback.

In many European countries, these paths have a historical origin, with their first records dating back centuries as pilgrimage routes. There are also newly created paths that traverse places of historical significance. These routes also have notable environmental values, and their potential as ecological corridors and green infrastructures is substantial.

Although this project is carried out in Spain and Portugal, its ultimate goal is to transfer the knowledge generated in these pilot experiences to the European context. This website is created to facilitate the replication of these results, allowing any LDNMRs in Europe to incorporate green infrastructure principles into its management.

Interactive Map

This tool provides an interactive map of various European LDNMRs, where you can check their geolocation, alignment with protected areas, habitats, cultural heritage, and the restoration/conservation actions that have taken place, among other aspects.

Path Finder

A search tool is presented with different fields where you can search by country, habitats, etc. Select the categories of interest or conduct a keyword search to obtain results for paths that match the information you are looking for.
